Romanticism vs. Realism

A new culture emerges during Industrial times. With the changing nature of work, daily life, family, and societal mores, a new artistic landscape materializes. In the 1800s, many writers, painters, and musicians wanted to turn away from the harsh realities of the industrial world and embrace the beauty of the natural world instead. Others wanted to represent the world on a realistic scale. This led to the rise of two different cultural movements: romanticism and realism.

Romanticism occurred from 1750 through 1850 - The Early industrial Revolution. It was an escape from reality. Realism occurred from the mid-1850s - during the full swing of the Industrial Revolution - and demanded we face the truth of every day existence.

Impressionism

Pictures v. Paintings.

Camera technology was introduced in the early mid-1800s. Many early photographs were portraits of wealthy family members. However, some used the camera as an art form: capturing the reality of daily life or reflecting a romantic fascination with faraway places. Photography presented an interesting challenge to painters. With the ability to capture images realistically, painters took art in a new direction: as a means of capturing impressions. Impressionism began in Paris, the heart of the artistic world.

Impressionism. The impressionistic era might have been short but it produced some of the most famous and well recognized art pieces around the world. For this reason, impressionistic art is the focus of today's lesson.

KEY POINTS

The romanticism movement sought to glorify nature, and far away places. Think of "romantic" such as poetry and heroes.

The realism movement sought to portray the world as it was. Think "reality" of work, cities, villages.

Photography emerged during the Industrial Age and could capture images of people and daily life accurately.

The Impressionist movement was born in response to the camera being able to capture reality; impressionists focused on feelings, emotions, and impressions that could be elicited by art.

Impressionist art inspired certain musicians such as Claude Debussy to compose music which has impressionistic aims.
