MAIN CAUSES OF WORLD WAR I

In the second decade of the twentieth century, a terrible war began in Europe, with the death toll eventually totaling an estimated 8 million combatants - and many more civilians. World War 1 broke out in late summer of 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, but the main causes of the Great War existed well before 1914. Those causes included imperialism, militarism, nationalism, and a tangled system of alliance.

WHAT SET OFF WORLD WAR I

Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife, Sofia, were assassinated on June 28, 1914. Carried out by a Serbian named Gavrilo Princip, the assassination was one of the events that led to World War I.
